The intensifying ECOLOGICAL, SOCIAL AND ECONOMIC CHALLENGES around the globe areproducing unprecedented reorganization of societies in space. Among the multifold causes, poverty and climate change are referred among the prime roots of the crisis which is producing massive migration (be it rural-urban or cross border). In an attempt to address the challenge of our time, the SCUPAD* conference this year which will be held in Addis Ababa deliberates under the topic : Cities beyond tools:Reimagining cities to confront poverty and climate change. The conference will take place from May 12 to 15 at the EiABC – AAU, Adis Ababa University.
SCUPAD Congress, May 12 – 15, 2016
Following this conference, an international inter-disciplinary student workshop is organized to boldly re-imagine city structures (both physical and otherwise) on the theme will take place from May 16 to 20. The workshop will focus on the newly emerging urban metamorphosis taking place in Ethiopia. Inputs lectures from both local and international guests shall be given and teams of students from various interdisciplinary and cultural backgrounds shall work together on the following themes.
* Reimagining Cities for Livelihood production
Primary focus (food and income security)
* Re-imagining Cities as active means of Environmental rehabilitation
Primary focus: water cycles, material cycle, air cycle, energy cycles
Sub themes shall be organized on deliberations of the first day. However, works of both themes shall be brought together on the final day of the workshop in order to produce an integrated strategy for the sustainable development of new (emerging) towns in Ethiopia.
Participant students have to be ready to work in a multinational environment with a tight schedule.

For students who want to participate on the main scupad congress, arrival to Addis shall be before the 12th of May (highly recommended).
