In April 2013, the students of the Free Choice (MSc2 elective) tried out the new “silent classroom” concept. The silent classroom uses headphones and a closed-circuit sound transmission system to allow participants to listen to a lecture, while in very noisy places. The lecturer talks on a small microphone and listeners are able to follow the lecture, even in very noisy and busy places. Tour guides have used this concept for a long time, making it easier for large groups to listen to explanations in busy and noisy places. Stephen Read gave a short lecture entitled “What’s this thing Space”? on concepts and understandings of space and how these concepts influence how we conceive interventions. The experiment was organised by Linda de Vos, conceived by Fransje Hooimeijer and promoted by the Department of Urbanism of the Faculty of Architecture and the Built Environment, TU Delft.
Students and teachers seemed very satisfied with the experience.
